Our Story

We understand that wine can feel intimidating and full of constraining rules. That’s why at Sequoia Grove, we emphasize crafting wines that are well-balanced, easy-drinking and adapt to a variety of dishes. Our goal is to help you to feel confident to explore and experiment with the widest selection of culinary sensations possible so that you can master the art of the perfect pairing.

Just as the ‘best’ wine is one which you enjoy, if you trust your taste buds, the same holds true for food and wine pairing. Don’t be afraid to try something or be put off because logic says it shouldn’t work. Rules are made to be broken!

This said, when it comes to mastering the art of food and wine pairing, there are two angles: starting with the wine and then matching the food to it or vice versa. At Sequoia Grove, we always start with the wine.

For the past 40 years, we have established ourselves as a trusted name in Napa Valley, celebrated for our consistency and approachability. We do this by crafting beautifully made wines served in the right dining setting to inspire true connection in life.

Our History

A Winery Is Born

Our present-day winery and its 24-acre estate vineyard was part of the original Rancho Caymus land grant given in 1836 to George Yount, the area’s first Euro-American pioneer. Over the years the property changed hands, until it was purchased in 1978 by James and Barbara Allen. The following year, the duo opened a winery in a 100-year old barn beneath a grove of Sequoia trees, and so Sequoia Grove was born.

The Heart of Rutherford

Our 24-acre Estate Vineyard and 50-acre Tonella Ranch Vineyard are both located in Rutherford, where the superb climate and gravelly-loam soils impart distinct flavor in the Bordeaux varieties.

Farming for the Future

Our focused range of wines has been expertly curated by seasoned winemaker Molly Hill, who has been at the winemaking helm of Sequoia Grove since 2003. Guided by her vision to respect our heritage and farm for the future, we observe sustainable farming practices, with minimal intervention in the vineyard and gentle winemaking in the cellar.

About Our Wines

We own over 75 acres of vineyards and work with nine different grape varieties in total. You will find most of these in ‘The Winemaker Series’ – a single variety range that pays tribute to the relationship between grower and winemaker. This array of elegant white, rosé, and red wines ensures you’ll find something you love to help bring your dinner to life.

Rutherford’s hot days and cool nights are particularly ideal for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. This is why Cabernet Sauvignon is our champion variety and we offer eight different expressions of it across our ranges.

For those seeking to discover the rich, ruby-red world of the king of the grapes, we invite you to try ‘The Vineyard Series’ – wines made to showcase site-specific soil, climate, and altitude variations from different vineyards. There are five Cabernet Sauvignons in this series, named after the vineyards of Morisoli, Henry Brothers, Stagecoach, Lamoreaux, and Tonella.

The apex of our Cabernet Sauvignon craft is the Cambium – with only 500 cases produced, it is made from our finest vines and destined for decadent dining.
