2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Our 2022 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a stunning wine that captivates with its enticing aromas of cherries, pomegranate, pluots, and bramble. On the first sip, you’ll experience a smooth, lush entry that unfolds into a rich palate of dry herbs and juicy black raspberries. This well-structured, medium-to-full-bodied wine delivers an elegant, mouthwatering finish with notes of blackberry jam, black pepper, and tobacco, complemented by refined cocoa powder tannins from its Rutherford fruit core.

The 2022 vintage is one of exceptional quality. The growing season began with some heavy rains in late 2021, though the beginning of 2022 was very dry. With a cool spring, crop loads were slightly smaller than normal due to the drought conditions. The early part of the growing season was near ideal, with excellent spring and summer weather. A classic Labor Day heat wave pushed concentration and propelled the vintage to one of the most condensed with one of the earliest starts and finishes for Sequoia Grove. The 2022 vintage should prove to be a rich vintage of lush fruit, great complexity, and balance.

2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

This Cabernet Sauvignon opens with notes of blackberry cobbler, plum, and black currant, followed by warm aromatics of fresh tobacco, tamarind, hints of vanilla, and caramelized black fruit. On the palate, this Cabernet is silky and lively, with medium-to-full bodied texture and weight, and flavors of raspberry, black cherry, black plum, and soft red and black stone fruit. Rich tannin, texture, and weight lead to an inviting mouthfeel. The finish is mouthwatering and lengthy with cherry and hints of dark, powdery cocoa, classic in Rutherford-based wines.

The 2021 vintage was of excellent quality, especially for well-selected sites. With very little rain during winter, the drought had a large impact on vineyards. Canopies and berries were small across all vineyard sites, lending to a concentration of aromas and flavors in the finished wines. The cooler spring delayed shoot growth in some vineyards and growers had to be careful not to over-correct and push vines for more growth later. The mild summer and light crop helped speed up ripening. In addition, the hills did not cool off at night, which expedited ripening ahead of the valley floor in some cases. The harvest started early and ended early and abruptly, with over 10 inches of rain falling shortly after the last grapes were picked in mid-October.

The 2020 vintage began with moderate winter rainfall and a warm and dry spring. Bud break began in late March, leading to a Spring that had few showers. Summer was temperate and steady, with heat spikes that pushed the vintage and set the stage for an excellent season consisting of small berries and great concentration. Once headed into early Fall, harvest was upon us rapidly. We moved swiftly to bring in only the premium quality of grapes to process, and we finished the season quickly.

Vegetable Bolognese over Polenta

This Cabernet is rife with the richness of Rutherford dust. It is packed with many layers, echoed by the layers of flavor in this vegetable Bolognese. The mushrooms, eggplant, and herbs bolster the earthy, dusty undertones, while the sweetness of the carrots and tomatoes and salinity of the capers and olives bring out vibrancy and bright, ripe fruit flavors of tart cherry and raspberry. Creamy polenta tames youthful tannin, allowing complexity to emerge even more readily.

Cabernet Franc has such a lovely savory quality that can do very well with Asian flavors. The earthy, meaty shiitakes complement the Rutherford dust component extremely well.
