Sauvignon Blanc

A Guide to the World’s Favorite White Wine

The History of Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is thought to have originated in the Bordeaux region of France, where it is still grown today. The grape’s name comes from the French words “sauvage” (wild) and “blanc” (white), which reflects its reputation as a difficult grape to cultivate.

Sauvignon Blanc is also grown in other regions of France, including the Loire Valley, where it produces some of the world’s most famous Sauvignon Blanc wines, such as Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. Today, Sauvignon Blanc is grown in many countries worldwide, including New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Chile, California, and, specifically, Napa Valley.
