Healy Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Frediani Cabernet Franc, and Johnson Vineyard Merlot
VBX-1 is a Vineyard Blend Experiment – a special Cabernet-based red blend conceived as a celebration of fruit from three of our more sought after vineyards.
The 72% Cabernet Sauvignon in this blend is sourced from Healy Vineyard in St. Helena. This hallowed site is located at the base of the Mayacamas where cool air, alluvial soils, and closely spaced vines create small, concentrated berries with intense flavors and elegant tannins. The blend predominately showcases the Healy Clone of Cabernet Sauvignon which is known for rich blackberry and chocolate notes. Complementing the Cabernet Sauvignon is 27% Cabernet Franc from the historic, dry farmed Frediani Vineyard in Calistoga. The Cabernet Franc rounds out the palate with richness and invigorates the nose. A touch of 1% Merlot from Johnson Vineyard in Yountville adds a juiciness that perfects and completes the blend.
Easily one of the best vintages of the decade, 2018 was ideal for Napa Valley, leading to wines with dark color, savory character, bright natural acidity, and finesse. The year started out with heavy winter rains and cool spring weather, resulting in late bud break. Good weather during flowering contributed to even set and ripening. The weather remained optimal throughout the growing season without typical late summer heat spikes. This mild weather resulted in fully ripened grapes which produced age-worthy wines with complexity and balance.
