Beyond the Harvest

What’s Happening in Sequoia Grove Winery’s Vineyards This Fall and Winter?

Harvest season at Sequoia Grove Winery officially concluded in mid-October, bringing the busiest time of year to a close. Now, while the vines rest and rejuvenate, our vineyard team continues essential work preparing the vineyard for the next growing season. From soil health to winter pruning, every step taken during fall and winter supports the quality and character of next year’s vintage.

Fall in the Vineyard: Preparing for Dormancy

With the last grapes picked and safely in the winery, the focus now shifts to preparing the vines for winter dormancy. During fall, Sequoia Grove’s team ensures the vineyard is nourished and set to weather the colder months.

  1. Soil Health and Nutrition
After a demanding growing season, the soil needs replenishment. We apply natural compost and organic nutrients to fortify the earth, creating a rich environment that will sustain next season’s growth. This layer of nutrients feeds the vines’ root systems, strengthening them for the season to come. We also practice no-till farming – this avoids disturbing the soil through traditional tilling or plowing, helping to preserve its structure and ecosystem. Instead of turning over the soil, cover crops are planted and organic matter is added to enhance soil health naturally. This approach improves moisture retention, reduces erosion, and promotes a thriving community of beneficial microorganisms, which contribute to nutrient-rich soil. In vineyards, no-till farming supports stronger, healthier vines by creating a stable environment for roots, ultimately leading to improved grape quality and sustainability in the vineyard.
  2. Vineyard Rouging
Vineyard rouging is the selective removal of unhealthy or undesirable vines to maintain the quality and health of a vineyard. By identifying and removing vines that show signs of disease, pest infestation, or genetic anomalies, vineyard teams prevent the spread of issues that could compromise the entire crop. This practice is often done during the dormant season and helps ensure that only the strongest, healthiest vines contribute to future harvests, ultimately enhancing grape quality and the overall vitality of the vineyard.
  3. Pruning Begins
As the vines enter dormancy, early pruning begins. This step is critical for directing the vine’s growth in the coming season, controlling yield, and enhancing grape quality. By carefully pruning in the cooler months, we help the vines conserve energy and establish a balanced structure for spring.

Winter Vineyard Activity: Caring for Dormant Vines

As fall fades into winter and temperatures drop, the vines enter full dormancy. During this quiet period, Sequoia Grove’s team continues the important work of maintaining vineyard health.

  1. Deep Soil Cultivation
In winter, we aerate and cultivate the soil to improve structure and drainage. Breaking up compacted soil around the vines allows roots to breathe and access vital nutrients, ensuring they stay healthy through the wetter winter months.
  2. Pest and Disease Management
Although many pests are less active in winter, this season offers a critical window for monitoring and preventing overwintering pests and diseases. Our team inspects the vineyard, addressing potential risks to maintain a healthy, pest-free environment for the vines.
  3. Vine Maintenance and Repair
Winter is an ideal time for essential maintenance around the vineyard. Our team repairs trellises, wires, and supports, ensuring the structures are strong and ready to support the vines as they awaken in spring. This proactive upkeep allows the vines to grow smoothly in the new season.

What Dormancy Means for Next Year’s Vintage

This restful season is essential for the overall health of the vineyard. During winter dormancy, the vines conserve their energy, readying themselves to burst forth with new life in spring. With a nutrient-rich foundation and a carefully maintained structure, the vines are set for a balanced, flavorful yield next year, which will shape the flavors and complexity of Sequoia Grove wines.
