The Secrets of Our Single Vineyard Series

You don’t need to be a seasoned wine drinker to know that Cabernet Sauvignon is the world’s most popular red wine. This classic red is a staple go-to in countless wine cellars, loved for its bold palate and ability to age. At Sequoia Grove, we pride ourselves on producing infinitely food-friendly Cabernet Sauvignon, best known for its rich complexity and balanced acidity and tannin.

Of course, when it comes to producing great wine, it starts in the vineyard with the growing of great grapes. Thanks to our 40+ year history, we have access to some of Napa Valley’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards. As each vineyard is so different,  our winemaking team has opted to produce on average six different Cabernet Sauvignons each vintage. Each expression comes from a single vineyard with its own distinct flavor profile. From juicy and fruit-forward to spicy and earthy, we strive for a variety of high-caliber wines that speak to every taste and suit every occasion. Each Cabernet Sauvignon we make tells the story of the unique terroir of the site where it was grown.

Singularly Superior

Put simply, the term ‘single vineyard’ is a mark of elite classification. Single vineyard sites, and the grapes grown there, are intentionally isolated because of their superb quality. A combination of elements such as soil, water quality, topographical location, climate (traditionally encompassed in the word, ‘terroir) in these vineyards are harmoniously balanced to ensure superior grapes.  In order to be labeled as a single vineyard wine, 95% of the fruit must come from that vineyard.

Luckily for us,  Napa Valley’s balmy days and brisk evenings are particularly suited to growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Coupled with the gravelly-loam soils, it’s little wonder that our fine wine reputation is so illustrious.

Another major benefit of single vineyards is that, through this isolation of each lot during the winemaking process, each harvest is given more individual attention. This ultimately results in a higher quality wine.

Six Sensational Experiences

Each of our six single vineyards delivers a nuanced wine with a unique reflection of the terroir. Although each wine is undoubtedly idiosyncratic, the high standards of Sequoia Grove remain a common thread that runs through every bottle. Here’s a breakdown of  of our Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard program and what makes these wines so special. You can purchase available vintages of these wines via our online store

1. Tonella Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Located in Rutherford and farmed by Sequoia Grove, our Tonella Estate Vineyard is divided into 17 unique rootstock and clonal blocks. During harvest, these are further divided into different sections based on ripeness. This Cabernet Sauvignon represents the very best of those lots.

Dark flavors of black raspberry and plump blackberry come to the forefront are followed by more savory notes. Scents of cigar box, forest floor, and sandalwood underscore the earthiness of this wine. One of our more broody offerings, this wine is best decanted young or cellared for up to 15 years to allow its richness to fully mature.

2. Christian Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

This family-owned vineyard is situated in the cooler Napa Valley region of Coombsville. The Christian family’s passion for their land rings loudly throughout this bottle. This is a vintage that generously highlights the skill of both winemaker and winegrower.

A distinctly floral variety, this wine greets its drinker with aromas of sweet berry jam and blueberry pie, followed by hints of sage and a surprisingly savory bacon note. This new and refreshing wine is one to watch, imbued with the classic Cabernet Sauvignon character. Our Christian Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon delightfully showcases Coombsville’s growing potential.

3. Lamoreaux Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

The picturesque Lamoreaux Vineyards are nestled against the Mayacamas mountains in the prestigious Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Ancient oak trees and grazing cattle sprinkle the property alongside many vines. The serenity of this vineyard melds into the wine it produces.

Ruby red, this wine bursts with alluring aromas of wild berry that give way to sweet raisin cake and brown sugar syrup. The palate carries notes of cherry and blackberry, finishing with a balance of acidity and tannin. Background flavors of fruit leather, cedar, and white pepper flow throughout each sip. This Cabernet Sauvignon is representative of the finest of Oak Knoll’s lots.

4. Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Our full-bodied Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes grown on Atlas Peak – one of the highest Southern blocks of the Vaca Mountain Range. Top notes of cocoa and boysenberry give way to a briny sea-breeze aroma that persists throughout the drinking experience.

The dark, reddish-black hue of this wine signals its intensity. Its rich yet unusual flavors of cigar box and charred meat are balanced by a wonderfully silky texture and a well-rounded finish.

5. MORISOLI VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Another Rutherford offering, this esteemed Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the Morisoli Vineyard at the base of the Mayacamas mountains. This iconic vineyard utilizes old Italian farming styles which center around minimal water usage and full tilling of the soil. The end-product is a concentrated, remarkably structured wine.

Its scarlet color foreshadows tasting notes of succulent dark fruit and black cherry. Bright aromas of red cherry, cedar, and a subtle hint of sage permeate throughout.

This wine is produced in the smallest quantity of all our single vineyard wines, making it one of our most coveted selections. With its distinctively round, full-bodied, and juicy flavor profile, it’s easy to see why.

6. Healy Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

These grapes are harvested on the grounds of Healy ranch, located just west of the town of Saint Helena. On the eve of the 2014 harvest, one of the largest earthquakes of the decade rocked the valley. After a harvest that almost culminated in disaster, Healy Vineyard remained undeterred and we were able to create a tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dark black-red, the aromas of this wine call to mind dark chocolate silk pie, mocha, and cherry. The palate carries red fruit and black cherry flavors intertwined with delicate vanilla undertones. This Cabernet Sauvignon strikes a fine balance between floral and rich notes, creating a smooth and velvety drinking experience. Because the Healy fruit is full of intensity, most vintages it becomes the backbone of our flagship red blend, Cambium, so it is a rare treat when we release a single vineyard Healy Cabernet.
